Where does content come from? Depending on the focus of
your website, the information should be the same information gathered
and distributed to your members. The information you give to new scouts,
new families and other scouts in your district is the same information
they are interested in on your site:
- General unit information (sponsor organization address, meeting times
and places, dens/patrols, etc.)
- Contact information (committee chair, cubmaster, den leaders)
- Upcoming activities (pack meetings and activities, den meetings,
community service and training)
- Photos/descriptions of recent activities
- Links to other resources (depends on focus of the website)
- Fun stuff (games, ideas and pictures appropriate to the audience)
“Look and Feel”
A consistent look and feel in your site helps build loyalty
and recognition. You should think about using the same colors, fonts,
graphic style and navigation. There are technical solutions to help implement
a consistent look and feel(Cascading Style Sheets, Templates, etc.) that
will be discussed in the technology section,
but you need to think about these issues up front, to make them easier
to use throughout.
The look and feel tells users a lot about how you see your
site and what you stand for. Look for colors and fonts that make the statement
you are trying to portray.
Copyrights and Trademarks
Use of copyrighted materials without permission is illegal
and cannot be condoned by the Boy Scouts of America or any associated
unit. Make sure you get permission and attribute stories, pictures, graphics,
etc. to the appropriate copyright holders on your site. Instead of copying
text or graphics, consider linking to the site (see Safety).
This ensures the copyright holder gets the proper credit. Any time you
link to another site, you should ask for permission or simply let them
know as a courtesy.
